The various types of acne scars & treatment for them

Besides dealing with active acne breakouts, you are also left to face acne scars that are typically left behind after an inflammatory acne. They are more likely to develop on those who pick at their active acne lesions. If you are suffering from acne scars, it is best to find out the type of scar it is. Knowing so will give you a better idea to look for solutions in acne scar removal in Singapore for your skin.

The most common types of acne scars are atrophic scars and hypertrophic scars.

Atrophic Scars

Atrophic scars refer to indented scars which look sunken in and have a pitted appearance on the skin. They form when the underlying structures that support the skin, like fat or muscle are lost and the skin is unable to regenerate tissue. This can also be caused by the lack of collagen produced while the lesion is healing. As such, the result is imbalanced scarring.

There are three types of atrophic scars:

  • Boxcar Scars: Boxcar indentations resemble chicken pox scars. They are round or oval depressions with flat bottoms and defined borders. They give the skin an uneven, pitted appearance.
  • Rolling Scars: The main characteristic of rolling acne scars is their wave-like appearance. They are wide depressions that typically have tampering, non-distinct edges. They give off an irregular, rolling appearance.
  • Ice Pick Scars: Ice pic scars can be characterised by deep pits. They are narrow and small with a depth of up to 2 mm. They typically form when the acne is severe, usually cystic acne that causes the infection to go deep into the skin and leave a narrow gap by destroying the skin’s collagen.

Hypertrophic Scars

These are raised scars that stand above the surface of the skin. The scars are caused by excess collagen during healing. This may happen simply due to a persona’s skin type and healing tendencies, where the body cells produce too much collagen to repair the lesion wound.

The process helps to stimulate the body’s collagen production and at the same time, the surrounding healthy tissues accelerate the overall healing. The result is shallower and lighter scar appearance.

  • Subcision

The subcision acne scar treatment is effective for very deep acne scars to break down certain acne scars and add fillers to achieve immediate lifting of the scar. In needle subcision, a fine needle is used to go under the scar and break up the tight collagen bands under the skin. During the healing phase, collagen growth and repair is stimulated which will result in an improvement of the scar appearance over time.
